English meaning
When the person desires food, feels thirst, and finds no enjoyment, these are the consecrations of that sacrifice.
Explanation
Dīkṣā is ritual consecration involving discipline. Hunger, thirst and lack of enjoyment resemble its hardship and restraint. The passage interprets existing experiences; it does not issue a new command to withhold food or water.
Context
The life-sacrifice moves beyond the years of life to identify everyday experiences with ritual components.
