English meaning
“From the dark I pass to the variegated; from the variegated I pass to the dark. Shaking off evil as a horse shakes its coat, escaping as the moon is released from Rāhu’s mouth, and casting off the body, with my self made complete I reach the unmade world of Brahman. I reach it.”
Explanation
Dark and variegated are the literal color terms; relating them to Brahman in the heart and the richly differentiated Brahman-world is a traditional interpretation. Rāhu’s mouth is eclipse mythology. Casting off the body is spiritual imagery, not an instruction to injure it.
