Passage 77.1
English meaning
Gautama, that heavenly world is a fire. Its fuel is the sun; its smoke, its rays; its flame, day; its embers, the moon; and its sparks, the stars.
Explanation
Each celestial feature from sun to stars is assigned a part in a sacrificial fire. Day as flame and the moon as embers are symbolic correspondences, not astronomy.
Context
The first fire in the five-fire sequence is the heavenly world.
