English meaning
“Speech is greater than name. Speech makes known the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Ātharvaṇa as the fourth, history and ancient lore as the fifth, the Veda of the Vedas, ancestral lore, calculation, omen-lore, treasure-lore, reasoning and debate, ekāyana, knowledge of the gods, sacred learning, knowledge of beings, the knowledge of rulership and warfare, and the lore of serpents and divine beings. It makes known heaven and earth, wind and space, water and fire, gods and humans, livestock and birds, grasses and trees, wild animals, down to insects, flying creatures and ants. It makes known right and wrong, truth and falsehood, good and bad, what is agreeable and what is disagreeable to the heart. Without speech, neither right nor wrong could be communicated, neither truth nor falsehood, neither good nor bad, neither what is agreeable nor what is disagreeable. Speech alone makes all this known. Contemplate speech.”
Explanation
Vijñāpayati emphasizes making something known or communicable. The selected text omits star-lore from this list, although it occurs in 7.1.2, 7.1.4 and 7.7.1; it has not been silently inserted. Hṛdayajña is read as agreeable or congenial, not simply anatomical knowledge of the heart.
Context
The discussion moves from names to speech, extending the inventory from disciplines to the world and evaluative distinctions.
