English meaning
“What is the support of this world?” “Ākāśa, space,” he replied. “All these beings arise from space and return into it. Space is greater than them all; space is their ultimate refuge.”
Explanation
Ākāśa means open expanse or space, but here it is more than the sky overhead: the text makes it the source, return and ultimate refuge of all beings. Because of that wider role, the Śaṅkara commentary interprets it as the supreme Self. That is an interpretive identification and should not silently replace the source term. The passage is philosophical cosmology, not a measurement-based theory of modern physics.
Context
Pravāhaṇa supplies a support even for earth. The chain now reaches ākāśa, described as the ground of both arising and return.
