English meaning
The teacher said, “The person seen here in the eye is the self. This is immortal, fearless; this is Brahman. Even if ghee or water is poured into the eye, it goes only toward the eyelids.”
Explanation
The visible person in the eye serves as a contemplative indication; reducing it to a mere reflection or physical organ would overlook “immortal, fearless, Brahman.” The ghee-and-water example is an analogy, not practical advice to put substances into the eyes.
Context
The teaching of the self begins with the person seen in the eye and continues the preceding image of nonclinging.
