English meaning
“Where one sees no other thing, hears no other thing and knows no other thing, that is bhūman. Where one sees another, hears another and knows another, that is the limited. What is bhūman is deathless; what is limited is mortal.” Nārada asked, “Sir, in what is it established?” Sanatkumāra replied, “In its own greatness; or rather, not even in greatness.”
Explanation
The three negations of otherness are deliberate. Different traditions interpret that non-otherness differently; the translation adds neither destruction of the senses nor an exclusive sectarian doctrine. Even the answer “its own greatness” is immediately qualified, anticipating the contrast with greatness measured by external possessions.
Context
Bhūman is described through the absence of otherness, followed by a question about its foundation.
