English meaning
“The sun is Brahman” is the teaching. Here is its explanation. In the beginning this was asat, non-being or the unmanifest. It became sat, being; it developed and took the form of an egg. It lay for the span of a year. Then it split, and its two shell-halves became silver and gold.
Explanation
Asat has been read as non-being or as unmanifest name-and-form; the translation leaves this interpretive issue visible. Becoming being, developing, forming an egg, remaining for a year and splitting are distinct stages. This is a religious cosmology, not a modern scientific account.
Context
The chapter closes by explaining contemplation of the sun as Brahman through a cosmic-egg origin account.
