यो ह वै ज्येष्ठं च श्रेष्ठं च वेद ज्येष्ठश्च ह वै श्रेष्ठश्च भवति प्राणो वाव ज्येष्ठश्च श्रेष्ठश्च ॥ १ ॥

जो ज्येष्ठ और श्रेष्ठ को जानता है, वह स्वयं ज्येष्ठ और श्रेष्ठ होता है। प्राण ही निश्चयपूर्वक ज्येष्ठ और श्रेष्ठ है।
English meaning
One who knows the eldest and the best becomes eldest and best. The vital breath is indeed the eldest and the best.

ज्येष्ठ उम्र या उत्पत्ति में प्राथमिकता और श्रेष्ठ उत्कृष्टता का संकेत है। आगे शरीर की शक्तियाँ प्रयोग के माध्यम से इस दावे को जाँचेंगी; यहाँ प्राण को केवल श्वास की एक क्रिया तक सीमित नहीं किया गया है।
Explanation
Jyeṣṭha conveys seniority or priority, while śreṣṭha conveys excellence. The following story tests this claim through the bodily powers; prāṇa is not reduced here to a single respiratory movement.
