देवासुरा ह वै यत्र संयेतिरे उभये प्राजापत्यास्तद्ध देवा उद्गीथमाजह्रुरनेनैनानभिभविष्याम इति ॥ १ ॥

यत्र ह वै देवासुराः उभये प्राजापत्याः संयेतिरे, तत् ह देवाः उद्गीथम् आजह्रुः-अनेन एनान् अभिभविष्यामः इति ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
जब देवों और असुरों में संघर्ष हुआ, जो दोनों प्रजापति की सन्तान थे, तब देवों ने उद्गीथ का आश्रय लिया: इससे हम इन पर विजय पाएँगे।
English meaning
When the gods and asuras, both descendants of Prajāpati, came into conflict, the gods took up the udgītha, saying: With this we shall overcome them.
व्याख्या
दोनों पक्षों का एक ही प्रजापति से सम्बन्ध बताना कथा की महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका है। संघर्ष के भीतर उद्गीथ का सही आधार खोजा जाता है; यह किसी वर्तमान समुदाय को देव या असुर घोषित करने का आधार नहीं है।
Explanation
The shared descent from Prajāpati matters: the narrative does not begin with wholly unrelated origins. Its conflict provides a setting for discovering the proper basis of the udgītha, not for labelling present-day communities divine or demonic.
