पृथिवी वाव गौतमाग्निस्तस्याः संवत्सर एव समिदाकाशो धूमो रात्रिरर्चिर्दिशोऽङ्गारा अवान्तरदिशो विस्फुलिङ्गाः ॥ १ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
गौतम, पृथ्वी ही अग्नि है। उसका ईंधन संवत्सर, धुआँ आकाश, ज्वाला रात, अंगारे दिशाएँ और चिनगारियाँ अवान्तर दिशाएँ हैं।
English meaning
Gautama, earth is a fire. Its fuel is the year; its smoke, space; its flame, night; its embers, the directions; and its sparks, the intermediate directions.
व्याख्या
पहली अग्नि में दिन ज्वाला था, यहाँ रात है। दिशाएँ और अवान्तर दिशाएँ भी अलग हैं; पाठ के प्रतीक हर स्तर पर उसी रूप में दोहराए नहीं गए हैं।
Explanation
Day was flame in the first fire; night is flame here. Cardinal and intermediate directions are also distinguished. The correspondences are not identical at each level.
