English meaning
He said, “When one is asleep, gathered into oneself and serene, knowing no dream, this is the self. This is immortal and fearless; this is Brahman.” Indra departed content at heart. But before reaching the gods, he perceived this danger: “In this condition he does not recognize even himself as ‘This is I,’ nor does he know these beings. He seems to have passed into destruction itself. I see no worthwhile fulfillment in this.”
Explanation
Destruction is Indra’s apprehension, not the Upaniṣad’s conclusion that the self actually perishes. “Seems” conveys that apprehension; the source at that point has eva. Lack of self-recognition and lack of knowledge of other beings remain distinct.
Context
The third stage is dreamless sleep, where Indra questions the absence of recognition.
