English meaning
There are three supports of religious life: sacrifice, study and giving are the first; austerity is the second; the celibate student who lives in the teacher’s household and devotes himself there to the end is the third. All these attain meritorious worlds; one established in brahman attains immortality.
Explanation
The first support contains three activities; the total remains three supports, not five or six. Commentarial traditions debate the institutional identity of one established in brahman; the root sentence is not narrowed here to one social designation.
Context
After describing three supports of religious life, the text concentrates the worlds, Vedic learning and sacred utterances into OM.
