English meaning
“Discerning knowledge is greater than meditation. Through it one knows the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Ātharvaṇa as the fourth, history and ancient lore as the fifth, the Veda of the Vedas, ancestral lore, calculation, omen-lore, treasure-lore, reasoning and debate, ekāyana, knowledge of the gods, sacred learning, knowledge of beings, the knowledge of rulership and warfare, knowledge of the stars, and the lore of serpents and divine beings. Through it one knows heaven and earth, wind and space, water and fire, gods and humans, livestock and birds, grasses and trees, wild animals, down to insects, flying creatures and ants; right and wrong, truth and falsehood, good and bad, what is agreeable and what is disagreeable to the heart; food and its sap or flavor, this world and the other. Through discerning knowledge alone one knows these. Contemplate discerning knowledge.”
Explanation
The speech section used vijñāpayati, “makes known”; this section uses vijānāti, “knows.” Vijñāna is not restricted to modern experimental science. Star-lore is present here, and food, sap or flavor, and the two worlds complete the list.
