स य इदमविद्वानग्निहोत्रं जुहोति यथाङ्गारानपोह्य भस्मनि जुहुयात्तादृक्तत्स्यात् ॥ १ ॥

जो यह जाने बिना अग्निहोत्र करता है, उसका वह कर्म ऐसा है जैसे कोई अंगारों को हटाकर राख में आहुति दे।
English meaning
For someone who performs the Agnihotra without knowing this, the act would be like pushing the embers aside and making the offering into ashes.

जीवित अग्नि और राख का विरोध ज्ञानयुक्त और ज्ञानरहित कर्म का रूपक है। पाठ बाहरी कर्म को केवल यन्त्रवत् करने की अपर्याप्तता बताता है; यह आग से प्रयोग करने का व्यावहारिक निर्देश नहीं।
