सा ह वागुच्चक्राम सा संवत्सरं प्रोष्य पर्येत्योवाच कथमशकतर्ते मज्जीवितुमिति यथा कला अवदन्तः प्राणन्तः प्राणेन पश्यन्तश्चक्षुषा शृण्वन्तः श्रोत्रेण ध्यायन्तो मनसैवमिति प्रविवेश ह वाक् ॥ ८ ॥

वाणी बाहर चली गई। एक वर्ष बाहर रहकर लौटने पर उसने पूछा, “मेरे बिना तुम कैसे जी सके?” उन्होंने कहा, “जैसे बोल न सकने वाले लोग बिना बोले जीते हैं, वैसे ही प्राण से साँस लेते, आँख से देखते, कान से सुनते और मन से विचार करते रहे।” तब वाणी फिर भीतर आ गई।
English meaning
Speech went out. After remaining away for a year, it returned and asked, “How were you able to live without me?” They replied, “As people unable to speak live without speaking: we breathed with breath, saw with the eye, heard with the ear, and thought with the mind.” Speech then entered again.

कथम् अशकत का कर्ता शेष शक्तियाँ हैं। कलाः का प्रसंगगत अर्थ बोलने में असमर्थ व्यक्ति है। कथा वाणी के अभाव और जीवन के अभाव का भेद दिखाती है, न कि वास्तविक चिकित्सकीय प्रयोग।
Explanation
The remaining powers are addressed by “how were you able?” Kalāḥ here denotes people unable to speak. The story distinguishes loss of speech from loss of life rather than reporting a medical experiment.
