English meaning
Vital breath asked, “What will be my food?” They answered, “Whatever food there is here, extending to that of dogs and birds.” All this is the food of An, the breathing power; An is its direct name. For one who knows this, nothing is altogether non-food.
Explanation
An is a name associated with breathing and is sounded alongside anna, food. The universality of food belongs to this contemplation of life; it is not advice to eat unknown, contaminated or harmful substances.
Context
After its superiority is acknowledged, vital breath asks about its nourishment.
