ते होचुरुपकोसलैषा सोम्य तेऽस्मद्विद्यात्मविद्या चाचार्यस्तु ते गतिं वक्तेत्याजगाम हास्याचार्यस्तमाचार्योऽभ्युवादोपकोसल३ इति ॥ १ ॥

ते ह ऊचुः—उपकोसल, सोम्य, एषा ते अस्मद्विद्या आत्मविद्या च [अस्ति] । तु आचार्यः ते गतिम् वक्ता इति । अस्य ह आचार्यः आजगाम । तम् आचार्यः अभ्युवाद—उपकोसल३ इति ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
अग्नियों ने कहा: “प्रिय उपकोसल, यह हमारी विद्या और आत्मविद्या तुम्हें दी गई। पर तुम्हारे आचार्य तुम्हें गति बताएँगे।” तभी उसका आचार्य लौट आया। आचार्य ने उसे पुकारा: “उपकोसल!”
English meaning
The fires said, “Dear Upakosala, this is our teaching and the teaching of the self for you. Your teacher, however, will tell you the way onward.” Then his teacher returned and called to him, “Upakosala!”
व्याख्या
अस्मद्विद्या अग्नियों के विषय की विद्या है; आत्मविद्या उससे जुड़ा आत्म-विषयक पक्ष है। गति आगे का मार्ग या गन्तव्य है, जिसे अगला उपदेश विकसित करता है। अग्नियाँ मानव आचार्य को अनावश्यक नहीं बतातीं।
Explanation
Asmadvidyā is knowledge concerning the fires, while ātmavidyā names its self-related dimension. Gati is the onward course or destination, developed by the next teaching. The fires do not render the human teacher unnecessary.
