Passage 73.10
English meaning
“...that thoughtful person, the Brahman priest. The Brahman is the one priest who oversees the whole.” Just as a mare protects the Kurus, so a Brahman priest who knows this protects the sacrifice, its sponsor and all the priests. Therefore one should appoint as Brahman only someone who knows this, not someone who does not, not someone who does not.
Explanation
Mānavaḥ is interpreted here as characterizing the reflective priest, while its ordinary sense is “human.” Kurūn has been understood as Kuru warriors or active participants. “Oversees the whole” clarifies the contextual force of “one priest”; the text explicitly includes other priests.
Context
The verse and the mare comparison characterize the supervising priest’s protective role. The chapter ends by requiring knowledge in the person appointed.
