ओमित्येतदक्षरमुद्गीथमुपासीतोमिति ह्युद्गायति तस्योपव्याख्यानम् ॥ १ ॥

ओम् इति एतत् अक्षरम् उद्गीथम् उपासीत । हि ओम् इति उद्गायति । तस्य उपव्याख्यानम् [इदम् अस्ति] ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
ओम् इस अक्षर को उद्गीथ मानकर उसकी उपासना करे, क्योंकि ओम् कहकर ही उद्गान किया जाता है। अब उसी का विवेचन है।
English meaning
One should contemplate the syllable OM as the udgītha, for the chant is sung with OM. What follows is its explanation.
व्याख्या
पहले खण्ड का वाक्य यहाँ जानबूझकर दोहराया गया है। नया विवेचन रसों या वाणी-प्राण के युगल की अपेक्षा देवताओं की कथा पर केन्द्रित है। उद्गीथ और ओम् की यह ध्यानगत पहचान वैदिक गायन की पृष्ठभूमि में समझनी चाहिए; हर प्रकार के गीत को बिना भेद उद्गीथ नहीं कहा गया है।
Explanation
The first section’s opening formula is deliberately repeated. Its new explanation concerns a story about the gods rather than the chain of essences or the union of speech and breath. The identification of OM with the udgītha belongs to Vedic chant and contemplation; it does not make every kind of song an udgītha.
