Passage 131.1
English meaning
“When one reflects, one understands. Without reflecting one does not understand; only after reflecting does one understand. Therefore reflective thought itself must be sought and understood.” Nārada said, “Sir, I wish to understand reflective thought.”
Explanation
Mati here is not merely an opinion but thoughtful engagement with a matter. Nāmatvā is parsed na amatvā, “not without reflecting”; reading it as a reference to names would change the argument.
Context
Reflection is presented as the condition supporting discerning knowledge.
