English meaning
Now follows the udgītha associated with dogs. Baka Dālbhya, or Glāva Maitreya, went out to undertake his own sacred recitation.
Explanation
Śauva means connected with a dog, from śvan. The root text joins two names with vā; the ancient commentary treats them as two names and lineage associations of one sage. The translation retains “or” without turning the scene into two people going out together, since the verb is singular.
Context
After the preceding teaching on the importance of food comes an unusual animal narrative. A sage who has gone out for sacred recitation becomes its witness.
