तेषां खल्वेषां भूतानां त्रीण्येव बीजानि भवन्त्याण्डजं जीवजमुद्भिज्जमिति ॥ १ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
“इन प्राणियों के जन्म-बीज तीन ही प्रकार के हैं: अण्डे से जन्म लेना, जीवित माता से जन्म लेना और अंकुर फोड़कर उत्पन्न होना।”
English meaning
“These living beings have just three kinds of origin: birth from an egg, birth alive from a parent, and emergence by sprouting.”
व्याख्या
बीज यहाँ उत्पत्ति के प्रकार या आधार हैं। अण्डज, जीवज और उद्भिज्ज को आधुनिक जैविक वर्गीकरण का पूर्ण प्रतिरूप नहीं कहा गया है। मूल में तीन श्रेणियाँ हैं; किसी अन्य ग्रन्थ की चौथी श्रेणी नहीं जोड़ी गई।
