English meaning
This earth is the ṛc, and fire is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon that ṛc; therefore a Sāman is sung resting upon a ṛc. Earth is “sā” and fire is “ama”; together they are “sāma.”
Explanation
A ṛc is a sacred verse, and a Sāman is its sung form; adhyūḍham evokes mounting or resting on a support. The same relation is contemplated in earth and fire. “Sā” and “ama” divide the word sāma for meditation. This is meaningful ritual wordplay, not linguistic proof of the word’s historical origin.
Context
A new series of cosmic contemplations sees the relation of ṛc and Sāman in earth and the fire situated upon it.
