English meaning
Uṣasti said, “Give me some of these.” The man gave them to him and then said, “Here is something to drink with them.” Uṣasti replied, “If I drank that, I would be drinking what was left from your drinking.”
Explanation
Anupāna is a drink taken with or after food, understood here as water. Ucchiṣṭa belongs to a historical framework of food purity in which another person’s eating or drinking leftovers had a particular status. This is Uṣasti’s response within the story, not a present-day judgement about anyone’s caste, social standing or food.
Context
The food is accepted, but the offer of water is not. The next passage asks why Uṣasti treats the two differently.
