स हेभ्यं कुल्माषान्खादन्तं बिभिक्षे तꣳ होवाच । नेतोऽन्ये विद्यन्ते यच्च ये म इम उपनिहिता इति ॥ २ ॥

English meaning
He begged from that man while the man was eating kulmāṣa. The man told him, “I have nothing other than these, just what is set here before me.”
व्याख्या
कुल्माष यहाँ पका हुआ दाल या अन्न-आधारित भोजन है; परम्परागत व्याख्या इसे माष से जोड़ती है। किसी आधुनिक पकवान की निश्चित विधि इसमें नहीं दी गई है। सामने रखे भोजन का उल्लेख बताता है कि अलग, अछुआ भोजन उपलब्ध नहीं था।
Explanation
Kulmāṣa denotes a prepared pulse- or grain-based food; the traditional explanation connects it with māṣa beans. The passage does not specify a modern recipe. Mentioning the food already set before the man establishes that no separate, untouched portion was available.
