Passage 1.5
English meaning
Speech is the ṛc, breath is the Sāman, and the syllable OM is the udgītha. Speech and breath, and the ṛc and the Sāman, form a pair.
Explanation
Mithuna evokes a paired union. Here speech and breath are complementary: meaningful utterance and the breathing that sustains song operate together. Prāṇa has a wider Vedic range than oxygen in modern physiology, so that identification should not be imposed on the passage.
Context
This answers the preceding questions by relating sacred verse and its singing to the joint activity of speech and breath.
