English meaning
Earth is the essence of these beings; water is the essence of earth; plants are the essence of water; the human being is the essence of plants; speech is the essence of the human being; the ṛc is the essence of speech; the Sāman is the essence of the ṛc; and the udgītha is the essence of the Sāman.
Explanation
Rasa suggests essence, nourishment or a concentrated expression. Earth, water, plants and humans evoke a chain of sustenance; the sequence then turns to speech, sacred verse and its singing. It is a ritual and contemplative ordering, not a modern account of biological evolution. A ṛc is a sacred verse, while a Sāman is its sung form.
Context
To establish the contemplative importance of OM, the text presents a sequence of eight essences. It moves from the material and living world to Vedic speech and song.
