English meaning
He said, “The sun. All these beings sing of the sun situated on high. This is the deity associated with the udgītha. If, after being warned by me in this way, you had sung the udgītha without knowing it, your head would have fallen off.”
Explanation
Uccaiḥ santam describes the sun as being on high, while gāyanti speaks of the beings’ song. The ancient explanation also relates the ud- of udgītha to the sound of uccaiḥ. This is the universalizing language of ritual contemplation, not a modern biological claim that every organism literally produces a song.
Context
The udgītha singer is given the sun as the focus of contemplation. The sun’s height and the act of singing provide the language of the association.
