स होवाच भगवन्तं वा अहमेभिः सर्वैरार्त्विज्यैः पर्यैषिषं भगवतो वा अहमवित्त्यान्यानवृषि ॥ २ ॥

सः ह उवाच-अहम् भगवन्तम् वा एभिः सर्वैः आर्त्विज्यैः पर्यैषिषम् । अहम् भगवतः वा अवित्त्या अन्यान् अवृषि ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
यजमान ने कहा, “मैं तो इन सभी ऋत्विज्-कार्यों के लिए आपको ही ढूँढ़ रहा था। आपको न पा सकने के कारण मैंने इन दूसरों को चुना।”
English meaning
The patron said, “I had looked for you for all these priestly duties. Because I could not find you, I chose these others.”
व्याख्या
पर्यैषिषम् ढूँढ़ने का और अवृषि चुनने का भूतकालीन रूप है। अवित्त्या यहाँ उषस्ति को न पा सकने की बात कहता है, उनके ज्ञान की निन्दा नहीं। संवाद से यह भी स्पष्ट होता है कि उषस्ति का पहले कही गई सम्भावना लेकर यज्ञस्थल आना निराधार नहीं था।
Explanation
Paryaiṣiṣam refers to having searched, and avṛṣi to having chosen. Avittyā here concerns failing to find Uṣasti, not discrediting his knowledge. The exchange also explains why Uṣasti’s earlier hope of employment at this sacrifice was not groundless.

Context
On learning his identity, the patron explains that he already knew of Uṣasti’s qualifications. The other priests had been appointed when Uṣasti could not be found.
