English meaning
He said, “The vital breath. All these beings enter into the vital breath and rise forth from it. This is the deity associated with the prastāva. If, after being warned by me in this way, you had sung the prastāva without knowing it, your head would have fallen off.”
Explanation
Prāṇa here is broader than the air passing through the nose: it is the sustaining principle of life. The rendering “rise forth from it” for prāṇam abhyujjihate is also supported by the ancient Sanskrit explanation. The shared pra- sound links prāṇa with prastāva in the contemplation. The ending is counterfactual: the chanting had stopped, and no bodily punishment occurred.
Context
The answer to the prastotṛ is the vital breath. The opening portion of the chant is interpreted through prāṇa as the ground into which life enters and from which it emerges.
