कं ते काममागायानीत्येष ह्येव कामागानस्येष्टे य एवं विद्वान्साम गायति साम गायति ॥ ९ ॥

[उद्गाता] कम् ते कामम् आगायानि इति [ब्रूयात्] । हि यः एवम् विद्वान् साम गायति, साम गायति, एषः एव कामागानस्य ईष्टे ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
“तुम्हारी किस इच्छा की पूर्ति के लिए मैं गाऊँ?” क्योंकि जो इस प्रकार जानकर साम गाता है, वही इच्छापूर्ति के गान का अधिकारी है—जो इस प्रकार साम गाता है।
English meaning
“For the fulfilment of which desire of yours shall I sing?” For one who sings a Sāman with this understanding has mastery of singing toward the fulfilment of desires: one who sings the Sāman in this way.
व्याख्या
आगायानि प्रथम पुरुष का प्रश्नात्मक प्रयोग है: मैं किस अभिलाषा की ओर अपना गान करूँ? कामागानस्य ईष्टे अनुष्ठान में अर्थ-ज्ञान वाले गायक की समर्थता का दावा है, किसी भी इच्छा को तत्काल पूरा करने की सामान्य शक्ति नहीं। अन्त में साम गायति की पुनरुक्ति पाठ के समापन पर बल देती है और पदच्छेद में पूरी रखी गई है।
Explanation
Āgāyāni is a first-person deliberative question: toward which desired outcome shall I sing? Mastery of kāmagāna asserts the competence of a knowledgeable ritual singer, not a general power to make any wish instantly come true. The repeated sāma gāyati emphasizes the ending and is preserved in full in the segmentation.
