English meaning
The eye is the ṛc, and the self-image appearing in it is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon that ṛc; therefore a Sāman is sung resting upon a ṛc. The eye is “sā” and the self-image is “ama”; together they are “sāma.”
Explanation
Ātmā has several possible senses. In this passage the supplied ancient commentary calls it the chāyātmā, the reflected form situated in the eye; the translation follows that local reading. Rendering it simply as the all-pervading supreme Self would conceal that interpretive issue. The eye provides a support and the appearing image corresponds to the Sāman resting upon it.
Context
After speech and breath, the text turns to sight. The figure appearing within the eye will be developed more fully below.
