Passage 98.5
English meaning
“My dear, just as through one lump of metal everything made of that metal can be understood: a modification is a name dependent on speech; the metal alone is the underlying reality.”
Explanation
Loha need not mean modern iron here. The translation keeps “metal”; Śaṅkara’s commentary takes the lump to be gold, while the material’s identification is not uniform across interpretations. The teaching concerns the material and its fashioned forms.
Context
After clay, the metal example repeats the same method of instruction.
