Passage 98.4
English meaning
“My dear, just as through one lump of clay everything made of clay can be understood: a modification is a name dependent on speech; clay alone is the underlying reality.”
Explanation
Vācārambhaṇam can mean originating in speech or dependent on speech. Satyam is rendered as the underlying reality in this comparison. The translation does not add the further philosophical conclusion that differentiated forms are wholly nonexistent.
Context
The clay example introduces the relation between one material and its many forms.
