English meaning
Dālbhya said, “Then let me learn this from you.” “Learn,” said Śilaka. “What is the support of that upper world?” “This world,” he replied. “What is the support of this world?” He replied, “One should not lead it beyond this world that serves as a foundation. We establish the Sāman in this foundational world, for the Sāman is praised as a foundation.”
Explanation
Ayam lokaḥ is this nearer earthly world. The ancient explanation associates earth with the support of living beings and earthly offerings with the nourishment of the divine realm. Pratiṣṭhā emphasizes its foundational role. Śilaka’s account supplies a ground lacking in the previous answer, but the next speaker will still judge its endpoint limited.
Context
Dālbhya now becomes the questioner. Śilaka grounds the upper world in this earthly world and in turn stops the chain here.
