English meaning
Saying, “So be it,” they sat down together. Pravāhaṇa Jaivali said, “Let the two revered gentlemen speak first. I shall listen to the speech of you two Brahmins.”
Explanation
Bhagavantau is a respectful dual address, not a reference to two gods. Brāhmaṇayoḥ also names the two other speakers and records their social identity. The ancient commentary identifies Pravāhaṇa as a king; the man who begins by listening will later supply the decisive answer. The exchange therefore does not reduce to a one-way display of social seniority.
Context
Pravāhaṇa initially takes the role of listener, leaving Śilaka and Dālbhya to begin the exchange.
