English meaning
“What is the support of water?” “That world above,” he replied. “What is the support of that world?” He replied, “One should not carry the inquiry beyond the heavenly world. We establish the Sāman in heaven, for the Sāman is praised as heaven.”
Explanation
Asau lokaḥ is the distant upper world, explicitly called heaven in the answer. The ritual association of Sāman with heaven gives Dālbhya a reason to take it as the final support. Svargasaṃstāvam is read as “praised as heaven.” The next speaker challenges this stopping point rather than simply erasing every dependency already named.
Context
The inquiry moves from water to the upper world associated with rain. Dālbhya wishes to stop the chain of supports there.
