English meaning
The king said, “Then why did you say you had been instructed? How could someone who does not know these matters call himself instructed?” Distressed, Śvetaketu went to his father and said, “Without having instructed me, you told me, ‘I have instructed you.’”
Explanation
Ardham here means the vicinity or presence of someone, not one half. Āyastaḥ conveys distress. The accusation against the father belongs to Śvetaketu’s speech, not the narrator’s final assessment.
Context
With his confidence shaken, the student complains to his father and teacher.
