English meaning
“And when a person is thirsty, heat is carrying onward what has been drunk. Just as one speaks of a cattle-leader, a horse-leader, or a people-leader, so heat is called udanyā, ‘carrying water.’ My dear, understand this very thing here as a shoot that has sprung up; it cannot be without a root.”
Explanation
Udanyā names thirst and is interpreted through carrying water. All three examples of leaders are repeated. This ancient explanation of meaning is not rewritten as a modern clinical account of fluid balance.
Context
Parallel to hunger, thirst is explained through the relation of heat and water.
