English meaning
“My dear, learn from me about hunger and thirst. When a person wishes to eat, the waters are carrying onward what has been eaten. Just as one speaks of a cattle-leader, a horse-leader, or a people-leader, so the waters are called aśanāyā, ‘carrying food.’ My dear, understand this here as a shoot that has sprung up; it cannot be without a root.”
Explanation
The wordplay between aśanāyā and nayante links hunger with food being carried onward. The shoot points to the arisen body or living effect, whose root is traced next. This is the text’s etymological and bodily account.
Context
The discussion of hunger begins an inquiry from food and water to the body’s root.
