तद्धैतद्ब्रह्मा प्रजापतय उवाच प्रजापतिर्मनवे मनुः प्रजाभ्यस्तद्धैतदुद्दालकायारुणये ज्येष्ठाय पुत्राय पिता ब्रह्म प्रोवाच ॥ ४ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
यह विद्या ब्रह्मा ने प्रजापति को कही, प्रजापति ने मनु को और मनु ने प्रजाओं को। यही ब्रह्मविद्या पिता ने अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र उद्दालक आरुणि को कही।
English meaning
Brahmā taught this to Prajāpati, Prajāpati to Manu, and Manu to his descendants. A father taught this same sacred knowledge to his eldest son, Uddālaka Āruṇi.
व्याख्या
पहले ब्रह्मा देवता हैं; बाद का ब्रह्म उपदिष्ट पवित्र ज्ञान है। उद्दालक का आरुणि नाम उनके वंशसम्बन्ध को सूचित करता है, लेकिन इस वाक्य में पिता का व्यक्तिगत नाम नहीं दिया गया। प्रजाभ्यः को प्रजाओं या सन्तानों, दोनों अर्थों में समझा जा सकता है।
Explanation
The first Brahmā is the divine teacher; the later brahma is the sacred knowledge taught. Āruṇi is Uddālaka’s lineage designation, but this sentence does not give the father’s personal name. Prajā may mean descendants or the people brought forth.
