English meaning
“Where the eye occupies its opening is the person associated with sight; the eye is the instrument for seeing. The one who knows, ‘Let me smell this,’ is the self; the organ of smell is for perceiving scent. The one who knows, ‘Let me utter this,’ is the self; speech is for utterance. The one who knows, ‘Let me hear this,’ is the self; the ear is for hearing.”
Explanation
Seeing, smelling, speaking, and hearing are all retained. Ākāśa here indicates the eye’s opening or place. Distinguishing the knower from the instrument is the passage’s philosophical proposal, not a translation into modern neuroscience.
Context
The first teaching about the person in the eye is clarified through the distinction between knower and sensory instrument.
