Passage 145.5
English meaning
When he departs from this body, he ascends along these very rays. With Om he makes his departure, going upward. In the time it takes to direct a thought, he reaches the sun. This is indeed the gateway to the world: an entrance for those who know and a barrier for those who do not.
Explanation
The Vedic sequence sa om iti vā hod vā mīyate is difficult; the translation follows its contextual reading as departure upward with Om. The speed of thought is an analogy. This is a religious account of a postmortem path, not a scientific description of dying.
Context
The sun’s rays become the route described for departure from the body.
