स ब्रूयान्नास्य जरयैतज्जीर्यति न वधेनास्य हन्यत एतत्सत्यं ब्रह्मपुरमस्मिन्कामाः समाहिताः एष आत्मापहतपाप्मा विजरो विमृत्युर्विशोको विजिघत्सोऽपिपासः सत्यकामः सत्यसङ्कल्पो यथा ह्येवेह प्रजा अन्वाविशन्ति यथानुशासनं यं यमन्तमभिकामा भवन्ति यं जनपदं यं क्षेत्रभागं तं तमेवोपजीवन्ति ॥ ५ ॥

सः ब्रूयात्—अस्य जरया एतत् न जीर्यति; अस्य वधेन [एतत्] न हन्यते । एतत् सत्यम् ब्रह्मपुरम् [अस्ति]; अस्मिन् कामाः समाहिताः [सन्ति] । एषः आत्मा अपहतपाप्मा विजरः विमृत्युः विशोकः विजिघत्सः अपिपासः सत्यकामः सत्यसङ्कल्पः [अस्ति] । यथा हि एव इह प्रजाः यथानुशासनम् अन्वाविशन्ति, यम् यम् अन्तम् अभिकामाः भवन्ति, यम् जनपदम् यम् क्षेत्रभागम् [अभिकामाः भवन्ति], तम् तम् एव उपजीवन्ति ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
वह कहे, “इस शरीर के बूढ़े होने से वह बूढ़ा नहीं होता, और इसके मारे जाने से वह मारा नहीं जाता। यही वास्तविक ब्रह्मपुर है; इसमें कामनाएँ समाहित हैं। यह आत्मा पाप से रहित, जरा से रहित, मृत्यु से रहित, शोक से रहित, भूख से रहित और प्यास से रहित है; इसकी कामनाएँ सत्य हैं और इसके संकल्प सत्य हैं। जैसे यहाँ लोग शासन के निर्देश का पालन करते हुए जिस-जिस प्रदेश की इच्छा करते हैं, जिस जनपद या खेत के हिस्से की, उसी-उसी पर निर्भर होकर जीवन बिताते हैं।”
English meaning
He should say, “It does not grow old when this body ages, nor is it killed when the body is killed. This is the true city of Brahman; desires are gathered within it. This self is free from evil, aging, death, sorrow, hunger, and thirst; its desires are true and its intentions are true. Here, for comparison, people settle under an authority’s directions and live upon whichever territory they desire, whichever district or share of a field.”
व्याख्या
आत्मा के आठ गुण पूरे दिए गए हैं। अन्त में भूमि का भोग शासकीय अनुमति पर निर्भर है; यह अगले अनुच्छेद के सीमित कर्मफल का दृष्टान्त है, किसी भूमि-व्यवस्था का वर्तमान समर्थन नहीं। सत्यकाम और सत्यसंकल्प के दार्शनिक अर्थ पर मतभेद सम्भव हैं।
Explanation
All eight attributes of the self are given. Enjoyment of land in the closing analogy depends on authority and anticipates the limited fruits of action; it does not endorse a present land regime. The philosophical force of true desires and true intentions remains open to interpretation.
