Passage 12.2
English meaning
A white dog appeared before him. Other dogs approached it and said, “Revered one, sing food into reach for us; we are hungry.”
Explanation
Annam āgāyatu asks for singing directed toward obtaining food, not merely a song describing a meal. Bhagavān is the dogs’ respectful address. Speaking and singing dogs belong to the extraordinary form of the narrative; this is neither a zoological report nor a guaranteed method of obtaining food.
Context
The other dogs address the white dog as a leader or singer. Their request concerns the same food that grounded the preceding two sections.
