English meaning
“OM, let us eat. OM, let us drink. OM. May the god Varuṇa, Prajāpati, Savitṛ bring food here. Lord of food, bring food here, bring it. OM.”
Explanation
Adāma and pibāma express “let us eat” and “let us drink.” The ancient explanation reads Varuṇa, Prajāpati and Savitṛ together as names associated with the sun’s functions; that interpretation is distinguished from the names themselves. Āharat is rendered as a petition, “may ... bring,” while its source form remains in the padaccheda. Annapate, the repeated āhara, and all four occurrences of OM remain meaningful parts of the chant; the numerical signs 2 and 3 are preserved separately rather than mixed into ordinary words.
Context
This is the dogs’ chant following the hiṃ sound of the preceding passage. Their wish for food and drink becomes a repeated petition to the deity for nourishment.
