तँ होवाच यथा सोम्य महतोऽभ्याहितस्यैकमङ्गारं खद्योतमात्रं परिशिष्टं तं तृणैरुपसमाधाय प्राज्वलयेत्तेन ततोऽपि बहु दहेत् ॥ ५ ॥

[पिता] तम् ह उवाच—सोम्य, यथा महतः अभ्याहितस्य [अग्नेः] एकम् खद्योतमात्रम् अङ्गारम् परिशिष्टम्, तम् तृणैः उपसमाधाय प्राज्वलयेत्, तेन ततः अपि बहु दहेत् ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
उन्होंने उससे कहा, “प्रिय, जैसे बहुत बड़ी प्रज्वलित अग्नि में से जुगनू जितना एक अंगारा बचा हो, और उसे घास आदि देकर फिर प्रज्वलित कर दिया जाए, तो वह आगे बहुत कुछ जला सकता है।”
English meaning
He said to him, “My dear, suppose that from a great, well-fed fire one ember the size of a firefly remained. If one fed it with grass and made it blaze, it could then burn much more.”
व्याख्या
पहले केवल बचा अंगारा था; अब तृण देकर उसे बढ़ाया जाता है। इस नए चरण को छोड़ने से अन्न और स्मरण लौटने के बीच कथा का सम्बन्ध अस्पष्ट हो जाएगा।
Explanation
Previously only an ember remained; now it is fed with grass and rekindled. This added stage supplies the narrative connection between eating and restored recollection.
