English meaning
Satyakāma’s wife said to him, “This student has undergone discipline and has tended the fires well. Do not let the fires speak against you; teach him.” Yet Satyakāma went away without teaching him.
Explanation
Taptaḥ evokes discipline or austerity. The wife’s warning makes the fires moral witnesses within the story. The teacher’s reason for withholding instruction is not stated here, so a hidden test is not invented as fact.
Context
The teacher’s wife recognizes Upakosala’s service and speaks on his behalf.
