English meaning
Gautama said, “One who is not a brahmin could not speak in this way. Dear one, bring fuel sticks; I will initiate you. You have not departed from truth.” After initiating him, he separated out four hundred lean, weak cows and said, “Dear one, go with these.” Leading them away, Satyakāma said, “I will not return with fewer than a thousand.” He lived away for a number of years. When they had become a thousand...
Explanation
The contrast between brahmin and non-brahmin is the teacher’s speech in an ancient social vocabulary. Truthfulness determines acceptance in this story; it does not by itself settle every historical question about caste. The final “when” continues into the next section.
Context
The teacher accepts Satyakāma on account of his truthful answer, and a long period of tending cattle follows.
